Children's Dentistry in Metairie LA
According to the Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, dental caries (decay) is the single most common chronic childhood disease. Without treatment, decay will damage your child’s teeth and have a lasting impact on their overall general health.
Protecting Your Child’s Oral Health
The best way to protect your child’s precious oral health now and in the future is with early dental visits, and you can be confident that your child’s care is in good hands at Oak Family Dental. Our team knows just how to handle your child's early visits in such a way that they develop a positive attitude about their dental care. We've treated hundreds of children over the years, many of whom have become adult patients who bring their children to see us. We know just how to respond to kids' needs so they feel safe and secure with us.
You can be confident that your child’s care is in good hands at Oak Family Dental.
Your Child's First Visit
We recommend that you bring your child to see us within six months of the first tooth erupting, but no later than their first birthday. Baby teeth will eventually be lost, but until that happens, they play an important role since they act as placeholders for permanent teeth.
We recommend "Happy Visits" for all new children. Their purpose is to allow your child to become familiar with our team and the new environment. There are new people, unfamiliar sights and sounds, and lots of scary-looking equipment. So at this point, our goal is to ease them gently into the idea of visiting the dentist.
- We’ll have your little one sit on your lap so they have the security of being close to you in a new environment.
- If your child is receptive, we’ll take a quick look at his or her teeth to see if there are any obvious problems.
- We’ll talk to you about effective brushing techniques, proper diet, and how bottle-feeding and thumb sucking affect your child’s teeth.
We make it a point to involve you both in the process. Helping your child enjoy excellent dental health is easy when you both understand the importance of proper oral health habits.
A "Happy Visit"
Are you afraid of the dentist? If your answer is yes, chances are you are scared because at some point in your life you had a bad experience at the dentist. At Oak Family Dental, we try to eliminate the chance of anyone being scared or fearful of going to the dentist by having a fun first visit for children! It is extremely important to establish a "dental home" as soon as your child's first tooth erupts into their mouth, or by their first birthday. A dental home is the ongoing relationship between the dentist and the patient that includes all aspects of oral health delivered in a comprehensive, coordinated and family-centered way. At Oak Family Dental we like to encourage "Happy Visits" for children's first visits. At this visit we introduce dental instruments such as the mirror, explorer, suction and air/water spray in a fun, non threatening environment. If your child is little and would prefer to sit in mom or dad's lap that is fine with us! The whole point is to allow children to have a great experience so they are not afraid when it comes time to have any dental treatment in the future. Please see our Children's Dentistry under the Services for more information. Here is a video of a child's first visit at Oak Family Dental. Its clear this child had a great first visit!
Your Child’s Comfort Comes First
Many of us developed a lifelong dread of dentists because of a single negative experience when we were young. Wouldn’t you love to know that your child isn’t saddled with this this kind of fear for the rest of their life?
Obviously, taking care of your child’s oral health is important. But the first step is making sure that your child feels completely comfortable and secure with us. We do this by treating them with kindness and showing them that visits to the dentist can be fun and enjoyable.
Under no circumstances will we force treatment on your child if we see that they’re not receptive. If for some reason immediate treatment is necessary, we can recommend oral sedation. Your child will not go to sleep but will remain calm enough so that they stay safe and we can work most efficiently.
