It's Never Too Early to Develop Healthy Habits

Many adults today are still saddled with a negative or fearful attitude about dentistry because of experiences they had as a child.

If you want to help your child avoid a lifetime of dental worries, start by helping them develop positive oral health habits when they are babies. Dental care should be ingrained in your child from an early age so that taking care of their teeth becomes second nature to them.

Starting with a Positive Approach

You may wonder what you can do about your child’s oral health at such an early age. But dentists know from experience that every positive experience they have now will help them when the time comes to finally sit in the dental chair.

Here are a few helpful ways you can help your child get started on the road to a lifetime of happy, healthy smiles:

  • Your baby’s teeth start to develop in the second trimester of pregnancy, so even though you can’t see their teeth, it doesn’t mean they aren’t there! A few days after birth, start cleaning your baby’s gums with a soft cloth to remove harmful bacteria.
  • When they first erupt, use an infant toothbrush to clean baby teeth. Choose a fluoridated toothpaste approved by the American Dental Association's (ADA). Call us to arrange your child’s exciting first visit!
  • When enough baby teeth have emerged that they are touching, you can start to gently floss between them
  • Starting at age two, you can teach your child to spit when they brush. Don’t give them water to rinse, because it’s likely that they will just swallow the toothpaste anyway.
  • Your child will not have the motor skills to handle a toothbrush properly until around age six, so always supervise them while brushing.
