You may have heard about dental crowns being used for such things as to cover a tooth that has a very large filling or to strengthen a tooth that has had a root canal done. But dental crowns are also used for cosmetic issues. Dental crowns will not only improve the look of a tooth, but it will make it stronger and protect it from further problems.

Let’s take a closer look at dental crowns in Metairie, LA, and how they are used to fix cosmetic issues.

Cosmetic Reasons You Might Need a Dental Crown

Most people will find they need a dental crown if they are in one of the following situations:

  • The crown is needed to protect a broken tooth.
  • The crown is needed to restore a worn or misshapen tooth.
  • The crown is needed as a restoration atop a dental implant.
  • The crown is needed to cover a badly stained tooth.

How Are Crowns Are Placed

There are a number of steps involved in placing a crown, and patients will usually require two visits to the dentist office to complete the procedure.

First, your dentist will prepare the tooth be removing the outer portion, making room for the crown. Then an impression is made so a crown can be custom-make to fit.

You will receive a temporary crown while you wait for the permanent crown to be made. The temporary crown might make the tooth a bit more sensitive to hot and cold. You should avoid chewing gum or eating foods that are sticky while you have the temporary crown in place.

When the permanent crown is ready, you will need to come in for an appointment to have it placed. Once we are ensured that you can bite down on it comfortably, the crown will be permanently cemented into place.
