"From the moment I walked into the door I felt as though I was the most important person in the room. I was waited on promptly. The dentist came in to greet me and to make sure he wasn’t needed. My dental hygienist was wonderful and caring. She did a great job on my cleaning and took the time to provide future dental advice. Great atmosphere!" -Deborah P.

Just the thought of having a tooth removed sends many people into a panic. It’s understandable – you have tried to take good care of your teeth and learning that you need to have one of them removed can be upsetting, to say the least!

There are several reasons why we might perform dental extractions at our Metairie office, and not all of them have to do with poor oral health. We are sharing a list of instances where one of our dentists may recommend extraction:

  1. You are considering dentures – Getting dentures doesn’t necessarily mean you need to have teeth removed. In fact, we make every effort to retain healthy teeth whenever possible. But we may decide that we can help you achieve the most comfortable and healthy long-term results by extracting one or more teeth.
  2. Wisdom teeth cause crowding – Wisdom teeth, or third molars, are a holdover from our ancestors who needed more chewing power for tough foods like leaves, roots, and nuts. But our diets have changed, and wisdom teeth no longer serve any practical purpose. If your wisdom teeth create problems like crowding and misalignment, you are better off without them.
  3. We are preparing for orthodontics – After carefully evaluating your case, our doctors may recommend extraction in preparation for orthodontic treatment. The purpose of orthodontic treatment is to align your teeth properly, but if your teeth are too big for your mouth, extraction may be necessary.
