"From the moment I walked into the door I felt as though I was the most important person in the room. I was waited on promptly. The dentist came in to greet me and to make sure he wasn’t needed. My dental hygienist was wonderful and caring. She did a great job on my cleaning and took the time to provide future dental advice. Great atmosphere!" -Deborah P.

Time for Dentures? Here’s What to Expect

A couple smiles in their house | dentures metairie la

Getting dentures is a big decision, but one that will change your quality of life! We have helped transform the lives of many patients at our Metairie dental with full and partial dentures.

During your dentures consultation, one of our doctors will explain all your options and help you make a choice about treatment that fits your needs. While we are in the planning process, we will work together to customize dentures that will restore function and complement your appearance.

Living with Your New Dentures

As soon as we place your dentures, you will start to feel more confident because you have a whole and healthy smile! But everyone goes through an adjustment period with new dentures. The important thing is to be patient with yourself and the process.

After your new dentures are placed, we will set up several follow up appointments to ensure that your dentures fit properly. In the meanwhile, here are a few tips for getting used to your new dentures.

  • Your dentures may feel awkward when you first start wearing them as your cheek and tongue muscles learn to keep them in place. Some minor soreness or irritation is not unusual. You may notice that your saliva flow increases temporarily, but these problems will gradually diminish.
  • It will take a little practice to learn how to eat with dentures. The best advice is to start slowly. Stick to soft foods at first and chew with both sides of your mouth to prevent your dentures from tipping.
  • You may have difficulty pronouncing certain words, and this can be particularly frustrating. Take some time to read out loud to yourself so you can get used to the feeling. If you notice that your dentures make a clicking sound, try speaking more slowly.
  • If you find that your dentures occasionally slip when you laugh, smile, or cough, bite down and swallow to hold them in place. However, please let us know if the problem persists.

We would be happy to arrange a consultation at our Metairie dental office to explain how full and partial dentures can change your life. Please give us a call!
