Need a Root Canal? How the Process Could Change in the Future

A woman holds her jaw, looking at herself in the mirror | root canals Metairie la

Nearly everyone dislikes the idea of root canals. Fortunately, improvements in treatment techniques and technology help to ensure that root canals at our Metairie dental office are far more comfortable than you ever thought possible.

The first sign that you have an infected root canal is often severe pain. We need to perform treatment to remove the bacterial infection and provide relief. Without treatment, the pain will get worse, and you will ultimately lose the tooth.

During the procedure, Dr. Patterson removes the infection, then disinfects and seals the tooth. When you return for your follow-up appointment, she checks the canal to ensure that all the infection has been removed.

The problem is that currently there isn’t a way to guarantee that all bacteria is gone. If we can’t detect remaining bacteria, we obviously can’t remove it. This increases the likelihood that we will have to retreat the tooth at some point in the future.

New Technology for Root Canals

However, a study recently published in the Journal of Dental Research shows that a team of researchers at King's College London, have developed a device that detects any bacteria in the root canal. This technology, called a SafeRoot device, uses fluorescent dyes and fluorescence microscopy to optically detect residual bacteria in the root canal.

When this technology is available, dentists will be able to check for lingering bacteria during the initial procedure, reducing the potential need for further treatment.

We value technology for the ways it helps us provide you with the highest standard of quality care. It isn’t clear when the SafeRoot device may become widely available, but until it is, we will use every method at our disposal to ensure that root canals performed at our Metairie dental office produce the best possible outcome.
