Until recently, the first-line treatment for obstructive sleep apnea was a CPAP mask. Short for continuous positive airway pressure, CPAP has helped millions of patients avoid the risks of sleep apnea.
CPAP and Compliance
However, this potentially life-saving treatment comes with a price; patients complain that the mask is uncomfortable, which makes compliance a problem. Many people simply do not use the CPAP mask, putting their overall health at risk.
Untreated sleep apnea can lead to high blood pressure, palpitations, heart attack, and stroke.
Updated Sleep Apnea Treatment
Recently the FDA approved a simple customized oral appliance for mild to moderate sleep apnea therapy that is available right here at our Metairie dental office.
During sleep, the muscles in your tongue and throat relax and fall back against your airway. Sleep apnea occurs when this movement constricts your airway, causing you to struggle for breath or stop breathing altogether. Your body responds to the lack of oxygen by waking you up so you can breathe, often accompanied by a loud snorting sound.
In certain cases, we can help sleep apnea sufferers with a small plastic device that looks similar to a mouth guard. The appliance positions your jaw slightly forward while you sleep and keeps your airway open so you can breathe freely.
Please Call about Our Sleep Apnea Device
If your partner complains about your loud snoring or you wake up feeling fatigued, you may have sleep apnea. Please call our Metairie, LA dental office and we can arrange an at-home sleep study to see how your breathing is affecting your sleep.
Depending on the results, Dr. Margaret Patterson can decide if you would benefit from an oral appliance or if we need to refer you to your primary physician for further follow-up.
