No one wants to get caught with bad breath! Odors from our mouths can be caused by numerous sources. Some of these sources include dry mouth, bacteria present in the mouth in the form of gum disease or cavities, food caught between teeth, medical conditions and tobacco.
Most people experience bad breath in the morning, commonly known as morning breath. The cause of this is while we sleep saliva production in the mouth decreases. Saliva is key to a healthy mouth and how our bodies naturally clean our mouth and teeth. With lower amounts of saliva, bacteria is not as easily removed from the mouth. The bacteria begin to accumulate and their byproducts are what cause morning breath.
Bad Breath Caused By Gum Disease
Gum disease and cavities are also common causes of bad breath. Both of these diseases are caused by bacteria accumulating on the teeth or below the gums. Once bacteria is allowed to fester in the mouth tarter begins to form which can only be removed by a professional cleaning.
Medical conditions such as acid reflux, sinus problems, lung disease, diabetes, and kidney disease can attribute to bad breath. If you have any of these conditions please inform us at Oak Family Dental.
Your oral hygiene at home is a direct influence on the smell of your breath. By brushing two times a day for two minutes each time and flossing daily, you remove bacteria present on the teeth. Brushing your tongue also removes bacteria that cause bad odors. Throughout the day gum with xylitol can be used to temporarily freshen breath. Avoid candies such as peppermints because these are high in sugar and will cause cavities over time.
