"From the moment I walked into the door I felt as though I was the most important person in the room. I was waited on promptly. The dentist came in to greet me and to make sure he wasn’t needed. My dental hygienist was wonderful and caring. She did a great job on my cleaning and took the time to provide future dental advice. Great atmosphere!" -Deborah P.

Everyone knows that their diet affects their body in various ways, and most people also know to avoid sugary foods and beverages if they want to keep their teeth cavity-free. However, it's not just avoiding sugar that's important. A good, nutritious diet equals healthier teeth and gums.

To help keep your teeth as healthy as possible, we recommend eating the following foods:

Foods Rich in Calcium

Foods like milk, cheese, and yogurt are high in calcium, promoting strong bones and teeth.

Foods Rich in Phosphorus

Like calcium, phosphorus is good for your teeth and bones. Phosphorus is found in fish, eggs, and lean meat, among other foods.

Foods High in Vitamin C

Did you know Vitamin C is excellent for your gums? Broccoli, spinach, peppers, and many citrus fruits contain high levels of vitamin C to help you keep your gums healthy and strong!

A good diet that avoids the right foods, like sugar, and promotes nutritious foods will help you achieve the best oral health possible.

Try to Avoid Too Much Snacking

At Oak Family Dental, we understand the need to snack. Everyone wants to grab a handful of popcorn or a candy bar occasionally for some extra energy between meals, or maybe just for a treat. However, snacking isn't great for your teeth. The more you snack, the more you expose your teeth to food particles and acids.

If you do need to snack, we urge you to avoid the candy bar in favor of raw fruits and vegetables or another healthy choice. Also, after snacking, drink water or rinse your mouth out to avoid leaving acid or sugar residue on your teeth for an extended period.
