Root canal treatment has an unfair reputation for being painful or complex. The reality is very different. Root canal treatment eases pain as opposed to causing it, and the therapy is very straightforward.

Another myth is that root canal treatment leads to systemic illness in the future. This is not the case because eliminating infection enhances your health and lowers your risks for further complications!

Some people also believe that extraction is a better option compared with root canal therapy. Again, this is only a myth. Whenever possible, you should always keep your tooth.

What Is a Root Canal?

A root canal is the housing deep in your tooth that contains your tooth roots and pulp. A root infection means this canal is infected and requires treatment.

Your dentist in Metairie, LA gently anesthetizes the infected area and gently removes the root and pulp. Afterward, we treat with a healing agent and temporary filling. Later, your dentist provides a permanent filling or a tooth crown, depending on the extent of damage due to infection. The tooth crown helps prevent breakage if your tooth has weakened.

Preventing Root Infections

Regular dental exams and professional teeth cleanings are your best defense against root infections. Your dentist can spot emerging issues, and your hygienist can clear away the bacteria that lead to infection and cavities.

It is also essential to brush and floss at least two times every day to keep your teeth free from bacteria, tartar, and plaque.

If you grind and clench your teeth, consider a nightguard to help prevent the wear that makes teeth susceptible to infection.

Don’t believe the myths. Root canal treatment is a safe and routine therapy designed to save your tooth. If you notice a blister on your gum, jaw swelling, or a toothache—all signs of root infection—contact a team member as soon as possible.
