So, you need a root canal
You need a root canal. What does that mean? Each year millions of root canals are done to save teeth. Root canals are recommended for a few different situations. One condition that requires a root canal is when a deep cavity reaches the nerve of the tooth. Our teeth are essentially made up of 3 layers. The outer layer, the enamel is the hard white part you see when you smile. The dentin layer is under the enamel; this layer serves to protect the inner layer known as the pulp. Within the pulp are nerves, blood vessels and connective tissue. Once a cavity reaches the pulp, or nerve, the bacteria from the cavity infects the nerve. This can be extremely painful. The only way to correct this problem is to remove all tooth structure affected by the cavity, including the nerve. Once the nerve is removed, and the inside of the tooth is cleaned and disinfected, the space is filled with a material called gutta percha. After the root canal is completed a filling and/or crown is put on the tooth for protection. Root canals are indicated when the pulp is inflamed or infected. This can be due to repeated dental procedures on a tooth, a deep cavity, or a crack in the tooth. At Oak Family Dental a root canal is not a big deal! New technology has eliminated the pain that was previously associated with root canals. Essentially it’s very similar to a filling appointment.
