Summer is here! If you have kids, you know it means days jam-packed with fun activities to keep the youngsters entertained and active. Summer for kids is all about having fun and taking some much-needed time off from school, but that doesn’t mean they should take a break from brushing or flossing.
At Oak Family Dental, we love helping our young patients maintain their best and brightest smiles. That’s why we focus on prevention and family education, so each child has the equal opportunity to attain excellent oral health and a strong set of pearly whites.
Here are four tips for improving your child's oral health during summer break.
#1 Brush Like a Boss and Don’t Forget to Floss
A brushing and flossing routine doesn't have to be a dreaded chore for your child. Because daily brushing and flossing are important to keep their teeth and gums clean, why not make it fun? For example, put on your child's favorite song while you brush and floss together. You can also let them choose their own toothbrush and flavored toothpaste, as long as they’re both ADA-approved!
#2 Drink Lots of Water
Staying hydrated is important for keeping your child’s teeth and gums moisturized and healthy. Fluoridated water is especially beneficial as it can quench your kid’s thirst while protecting their teeth against cavities.
#3 Eat Healthy Snacks
Summer is usually a time for indulging in cool treats that beat the heat. Though enjoying the occasional special treat, like a sno-cone or ice pop, is okay, it’s absolutely essential that your child maintain a healthy diet as they continue to grow. They should not mindlessly munch on chips and other types of junk food. Fruits and veggies, like grapes or carrot sticks, are perfect for summer snacking, and they are much healthier for your child’s mouth.
#4 Get Regular Dental Check-Ups
We recommend seeing kids for routine exams and cleanings every six months to screen them for cavities and other potential problems. During these checkups, we also clean their teeth and gums to make sure their smiles are fresh and shiny before the new school year.
