"From the moment I walked into the door I felt as though I was the most important person in the room. I was waited on promptly. The dentist came in to greet me and to make sure he wasn’t needed. My dental hygienist was wonderful and caring. She did a great job on my cleaning and took the time to provide future dental advice. Great atmosphere!" -Deborah P.

When should we start brushing and using toothpaste?

Often time having a baby can be stressful with a lot of questions that you need answering. Here at Oak Family Dental, we specialize in children's dentistry and want to make sure you know everything involved in your child's dental care. Our team often get the question of when should you brush your baby's teeth.child with hand paint | childrens dentistry metairie la

Early Start to Brushing

You should start brushing at birth.  As soon as your baby is home we recommend using a washcloth or soft infant toothbrush with water to clean your baby's gums.  As soon as a tooth erupts, a smear of fluoride toothpaste can be used twice a day with a soft, age appropriate toothbrush.  Starting at age 3, the amount of toothpaste can be increased to the size of a grain of rice, and at age 6 the amount can be increased to the size of a pea.  Excess toothpaste should be spit out after brushing.

If you have any further questions about your child's dental care or want to schedule an appointment for them, please call our office.
