Thumb sucking and pacifiers become an issue if they start to affect your child's skeletal development. They do this by causing a misalignment of the jaws. The roof of the mouth can begin to narrow, resulting in a high arch. The roof of the mouth literally starts to take on the form of the thumb or pacifier. This can cause the front teeth to flare out and in severe cases cause an anterior open bite, where the front teeth do not overlap. The good news is most children discontinue the habit before these changes occur.
Recommendations for Using a Pacifier
We recommend children stop the use of pacifiers by age 2-3. If the habit continues an appliance on the roof of the mouth may be required to help discourage the habit.

The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends children see a dentist by their first birthday or 6 months after their first tooth erupts. At this visit, the dentist will review how to care for an infant or toddler's mouth, proper use of fluoride, oral habits (including finger and thumb sucking), ways to prevent accidents involving the face and teeth, teething, and the link between diet and oral health.
Scheduling a Children's Dentist Appointment
Often time having a baby can be stressful with a lot of questions that you need answering. Here at Oak Family Dental, we specialize in children's dentistry and want to make sure you know everything involved in your child's dental care. Our team often get the question of when should you brush your baby's teeth.
Early Start to Brushing
You should start brushing at birth. As soon as your baby is home, we recommend using a washcloth or soft infant toothbrush with water to clean your baby's gums. As soon as a tooth erupts, a smear of fluoride toothpaste can be used twice a day with a soft, age-appropriate toothbrush. Starting at age three, the amount of toothpaste can be increased to the size of a grain of rice, and at age 6 the amount can be increased to the size of a pea. Excess toothpaste should be spat out after brushing.
