Wisdom teeth that are properly positioned and don’t cause pain or other dental problems probably do not need to be removed. However, Dr. Margaret Patterson will recommend removal of wisdom teeth at our Metairie dental office if they are impacted or cause crowding problems for your other teeth.
There are two different ways that wisdom teeth can grow. Some grow in like correctly, and some will become impacted. Impaction is usually the case when there isn’t enough room in your jaw for the teeth to erupt normally.
Impacted wisdom teeth cannot grow properly; sometimes they don’t emerge and lay horizontally in the gum. In other cases, they come out sideways and lean toward another tooth. Also, a wisdom tooth might not fully emerge, which makes it difficult to keep clean and creates a place for plaque and bacteria to thrive.
Determining Whether to Remove Your Wisdom Teeth
It’s probably okay to keep erupted wisdom teeth that don’t cause a lot of crowding or don’t hurt. However, even wisdom teeth that erupt properly are more prone to decay because they are so hard to clean properly. Of course, the decision is up to you. But Dr. Patterson may determine that removing your wisdom teeth at our Metairie dental office is the best way to avoid any problems that might develop.
We will be happy to discuss your options, but if you want to avoid any of the problems associated with wisdom teeth, it’s best that they be removed. Please call Oak Family Dental to learn more about wisdom teeth removal.

At Oak Family Dental, we stress preventative dentistry and try to avoid extracting teeth at all costs. However, it may be in your best interest to have a tooth removed. There are many reasons why teeth need to be extracted.
Typically teeth are removed because they are deemed non-restorable. Meaning a crown, filling, root canal, etc. cannot be done to save the tooth. A tooth can become non-restorable due to a very large cavity, a crack or break, periodontal disease or infection. Another reason teeth have to be removed is for crowding issues. Often when teeth are very crowded, an orthodontist will request teeth to be removed to make room for the other teeth.
